The development of Tourism
What is Modernity?
It is important to make clarify the term ‘modern’. In everyday usage, we use the term modern to refer to something that is recent, a current trend or fashion. However, the sociological concept of modernity refers to society about 500 years ago which provided not only the means for people to participate in tourism (mass transportation, increase in disposable income, socially sanctioned free time) but also the desire or motivation to escape from routine.
Meethan (2001) makes a distinction between modern and modernity and asserts that the roots of modern tourism were in the Grand Tour but mass tourism is in modernity.
Sociologists distinguish between pre-modern, modern and post-modern societies.
